Cook Islands Community perception of policing survey
Monday 30 March 2015

A survey of the Cook Islands Community perceptions of policing was coordinated by Dr Christine McMurray, Associate Professor (Adjunct). Results from the survey will enable the Cook Islands police to better plan community policing strategies.

The survey, funded by the Australian Federal Police, is part of the Pacific Police Development Programme.

Chris was assisted by Mrs Dharma Chandra, a graduate of the former Graduate Program in Demography at NCDS and later a lecturer in Population Studies at the University of the South Pacific. Dharma has also assisted her with other police surveys in Tonga, Marshall Islands and Tuvalu.

Local interviewers were trained in interviewing skills including asking questions in English and Maori, asking questions without biasing responses and data entry. They interviewed 300 people across Raratonga, 160 in Aitutaki and 100 in Mauke.

Chris will be running a similar survey in Palau and possibly other Pacific Islander communituies.
